Welcome to AlliancesThe ‘Alliances Initiative’ has been established in response to a call from our local government participants for a mechanism to exchange information, problem solve and network nationally and internationally. The Initiative is available to ICLEI Members, and Cities for Climate Protection participants.
Alliances’ overarching aims are to:
- promote knowledge exchange between municipalities internationally on greenhouse and broader sustainable development issues
- promote joint project implementation
- to promote assistance to developing country municipalities
- create stronger global links between countries through municipal relations
- form and promote partnerships that align with the mission of ICLEI to result in tangible improvements in global environmental conditions
Alliances has two streams:
- Multilateral Alliances are based upon a single topic that is of particular interest to the participants.
- A Bilateral Alliance is based on two councils ‘twinning’ to address a range of topics over a longer period of time.
The mechanisms for Alliances to operate will initially involve:
- Net email groups
- Website updates and resources
- Bi-monthly teleconferences
- Regular phone contact
- Participation in associated events
As the initiative progresses and is established other mechanisms can be utilised to facilitate progress:
- International events
- Web-conferencing
- Face to face staff exchanges
Specific desired outcomes of the Alliances initiative:
It is intended that the Alliance Initiative will assist participants to progress their campaign objectives and as such it follows the same performance based approach as CCP. The Alliance Initiative will aim to achieve quantifiable:
- CO2e reduction
- local job creation
- greenhouse gas abatement investment and savings
- other multiple benefits
To become part of an Alliance, your council must commit to the following:
- Provide one managerial level and one officer level staff member that will be responsible for your council’s participation.
- Host at least one tele-conference during the Alliance
- Contribute a range of resource documents and internet links on the specific topic which will be uploaded to the Alliance website.
- Meet deadlines as agreed to by the Alliance.
Who can join?
- ICLEI members
- Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign participants who have joined CCP Plus
ICLEI-A/NZ is currently producing a guide to assist either CCP participants or ICLEI members to establish their own Alliances. This will be made available on the CCP Plus website by June 2005.
